Pentaho BI Platform

The Pentaho BI Platform comes bundled with the BI Server (which includes the J2EE application server, etc.). For deployment, it is considered to be part of the server.

For development, however, it might be worthwhile considering it as a distinct element. This will give you an embeddable toolkit that is faster and simpler to work with than an entire J2EE BI server.

This guide (forum discussion) shows how to decouple the platform from the server. It describes the platform as "a runtime environment for a XML-based process-language that additionally provides auditing, logging, configuration and other infrastructure needs to allow to run BI-Jobs."
