Files and their locations

Pentaho solutions are in ${pentaho}/pentaho-demo/pentaho-solutions/. Each directory in here is a solution.

The 'samples' directory contains samples made by Pentaho, and can be very useful to examine if you wish to learn more about Pentaho.

The .properties files are text files that name and describe the directory they are in. These properties are shown in the Web interface of Pentaho. The samples directory contains many of these to cover different languages.

There are two main kinds of .xml files. index.xml determines how the directory is shown in the Web interface. The other .xml files are likely to be templates for reports. The Report Designer creates .report files for editing, but exports them to .xml files for the Pentaho server to read them.

.xaction files contain the actual logic of the report, including SQL/MDX queries. Some might be configured to call an .xml file as a template for displaying the results of the report. You can edit .xaction files in the Design Studio.
